About the
Suvya Carroll, Sloan Meek, and Lee Anderson are three friends who love to sing together. They are also neighbors in the North Street Neighborhood- two blocks of beloved community in downtown Durham, born of relationships formed through Reality Ministries, whose mission is to “create opportunities for adults with and without developmental disabilities to experience belonging, kinship and the life-changing Reality of Christ’s love.”
In the summer of 2019 they teamed up with Jeff Crawford (Arbor Ridge Studios) and Daniel Goans (Lowland Hum) to record an album of original music that has grown out of their community life together. During the recording process they received the nickname ‘Meek Squad’ and it stuck. ‘I Am For You: Songs of Prayer and Peace’ was released on March 24th, 2020.
Sloan Meek was born in Memphis and raised in North Carolina. He lives with cerebral palsy, spastic quadriplegia, and cortical blindness and has worked to live a life worthy of his nickname, the Meek Man. His qualifications are the ones we know matter most - a faithful friend with a healthy dose of blunt honesty. Happiness is palpable when Sloan is singing, and he is excited to share his gifts. Sloan is a founding resident of North Street Neighborhood where lives with his friend, Wendy. The two of them are deeply invested within the Reality community, and more recently in the Catholic Church.
Suvya Carroll, hailing from Henderson, NC, moved to the North Street Neighborhood in 2016 where she is known for being an outgoing friend who loves community and being with people. Living with cerebral palsy, she can be found, just about any day of the week, leading with her joyful voice at Reality Ministries events, North Street daily prayer gatherings, her church, and beyond. When she started singing with Sloan and Lee it was like ‘three peas in a pod.’ She loves to laugh and smile a lot, and to have a good sense of humor. Music brings her peace.
Lee Anderson, a North Carolina native, grew up in Greensboro and finished his undergraduate in Religious Studies at UNC. Having met through Reality Ministries, he has known Sloan and Suvya for many years, and music has been an integral and joyful part of their friendships. He is a founding resident of the Corner House- a hospitality house in the North Street Neighborhood, and a parishioner at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He is on support staff for Sloan, directs music at the Gathering Church, and is lead singer/songwriter of the band Look Homeward.
